In parallel with the registration of dogs with keepers/owners and strict control of breeding and sale of dogs, as two of the main measures, the proper shelter of stray dogs was discussed. We have emphasized as always that sheltering street animals, without focusing on the sources of the problem, apart from the high financial cost, will have no effect at all if the number of dogs on the street continues to increase.
Catch, neuter, vaccinate, and release (CNVR) projects should be active at all times in every municipality in Kosovo to at least control the breeding of dogs on the street. As most municipalities currently do not have an active CNVR projects nor do we have a state CNVR project, the number of stray dogs keeps increasing.
Mayor Rama listened to us attentively and ensured serious cooperation with civil society in this field, so that the issue of improper management of owned and stray dogs is significantly improved in the next 5 years.
All the measures we have discussed are part of the Municipal Measures for Effective and Sustainable Management of the stray dog population.
